Amazing teens are everywhere, and so many of them are starting to speak out and make change by doing things that they enjoy. We believe that everyone has a story to tell— their story. And it is our mission to make everyone’s story heard. We all effect the world around us, and we all have something amazing to give. That is why book corner has devoted a page to amazing teens from around the globe.
Emma Gonzalez During the horrific aftermath or the tragic Marjory Stoneman Douglas High-school shooting, many teenagers came out of the woodwork to speak up on behalf of their beloved friends, and step up to advocate for a stronger gun violence policy, including Emma Gonzalez. Emma has spoken out publicly against gun violence, and rising to the forefront of the protest of gun violence and school shootings. Emma has turned from ordinary student to activist and advocate for a cause she believes in.
Jack Andraka Most people think that only scientists can fight disease, but who says teens cant be scientists? After a family friend passed away due to cancer, Jack was inspired to make change, and help people get tested for the disease. After being rejected nearly 200 times, Jack finally found lab space to work at, and started developing his idea. What he came up with: a test strip that tests for early stages of pancreatic and other cancers in the blood stream. Remarkably, this is the cheepist and fastest way to test for certain types of cancer, costing only 3 cents and it only takes 5 minuets to work! And, all of this was accomplished before Jack could even drive.
Laura Dekker Laura is a Dutch girl who wanted to be the youngest person to sail around the world solo, and she made it her mission. Unfortunately, the Dutch government wouldn’t let her travel without her parents, who held custody of her. However in 2010, a family court stepped in, allowing Laura to leave on her journey, and Laura set off. She started the voyage at age 14, and ended at age 16, sailing a total of 5,600 nautical miles by herself. Laura’s voyage tells us that teens can accomplish anything that they put their mind to, if only they try hard enough.
Jordan Romero Jordan is climbing to greatness— literally! Jordan Romero was only 13 years old when he set foot on the summit of earth’s tallest mountain, Mt. Everest. Jordan is the youngest person in the world to have climbed the tallest mountain from every continent on earth, the Seven Summits. Since then, Jordan has been a worthy role model for us all, and a reminder that no goal is truly out of reach.
Malala Yousafzai Malala was just a teenager in Pakistan who wanted a quality education. On the 9 of October, 2012, Malala and two other girls were on the bus home after taking an exam in school, the girls were shot by the Taliban in retaliation to Malala’s educational activism. Malala caught a bullet in the head, but miraculously, survived. This severe event in her life created a worldwide movement of international feminist groups against the Taliban. Following the trauma, Malala used the worldwide support as a stepping stone for her activism and advocacy for equal and quality education. Since then, Malala has won a Nobel prize for peace, and published a memoir entitled “I am Malala”. Malala’s is a heartbreaking story of violence, activism, and an amazing example of stepping up to give the world something it needs: honest, virtuous courage directed towards something that would benefit all of us.
