Interview With Jake Wallis-Maraques, age 14
Jake Wallis-Marques is a 14 year old who attends private school in Canada. Jake is proud of his academic accomplishments in school, and can’t wait to start high school next year. In this interview, Jake talks to us about his academic accomplishments, and it all started when he picked up a good book.
Book Corner: when did you first realize that reading set you apart from the rest of your class?
Jake: the majority of my class did not like to read, and so they didn’t do it often. But as soon as I picked up The Giver by Lois Lowry, I realized that, hell, they were missing out! I made a point to read whenever I could after that, and soon my grades on spelling tests and writing assignments started going up, like, basically over night.
Book Corner: tell us more about where you have gone with your love of teen lit.
Jake: well, my English teacher told me about this spelling bee in my local civic center that supported a good charity. She said that I had been doing so well on spelling tests and vocabulary quizzes that I should try it out. I didn’t win, but I was 2nd place and I still got the runner-up donation. I also got a full English scholarship to a local private high school.
Book Corner: and do you think that your love of reading will endure through high school?
Jake: man, I sure hope so! I literally cant imagine what I would do with all the time I spend reading.
