Interview With Addie Maroy, age 15

Addie Maroy is a 15 year old who attends private school in New York. When not in school, she enjoys art, music, writing, reading, and phone banking to support her favorite political figures. We interview Addie today to see her outlook on the world that she is one day motivated to change for the better.

Book Corner: do you feel like your interests affect your school life? How so?

Addie: I absolutely think that they do. It is proven that people who understand civics and government do better in school, because they understand the true value of a quality education. I am super interested in civics and politics, and I kind of connect that to my situation right now, where I am determined to do well and succeed in later life.

Book Corner: how do you think teens like you can be empowered to make a change?

Addie: well, in the words of Alice Walker: “the most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.”. I think that we all have the power to influence the world around us. Teens like me can make change happen by working on political campaigns, attending marches and rallies, or just emailing our representatives. We can’t vote yet, but we do have the power to influence people.

Book Corner: take us step by step through the evolution of your current passion.

Addie: I first became interested in politics when I was 12 years old, during the election of 2016. Since then I have attended multiple marches and rallies, gone to social justice and activism camp, and attended workshops for teen girls interested in government. By the time I was 12, I researched political figures I supported, and started phone banking.
