The Giver
The Giver by Lois Lowry is a chilling tale woven from threads of the future, interwoven with longing for the past. Young Jonas is about to receive his life role, or assigned career that he will have to abide by for the rest of his life. Jonas receives the role of Receiver of Memories, a post almost never assigned. The person who gives Jonas his role says he has the ability to See Beyond. This means that Jonas has the power to see qualities that no one else can— things like color. Jonas soon begins his apprenticeship with the current Receiver, known only as The Giver. Jonas’ family adopts a newchild baby named Gabe. when Gabe cries, Jonas relises positive memories from the Giver into him to calm him down. Now Gabe also has memories.
The Giver shows gives Jonas amazing things, wonderful things called animals, grandparents, and sunshine. Jonas even learns about colors.
But Jonas also knows pain. Unbelievable pain. He now Knows about war. Death. Sickness. injury.
The Giver and Jonas decide that the world would be better if all people could have things like memories and colors, so The Giver Decides that Jonas should leave the development and let the memories disperse into the world, to be owned by all.
Jonas sneaks away, riding his bike with Gabe on his back. unknown to them, hardship awaits them in the form of winter, starvation, and fatigue. but something else is also stirring within Jonas— promise. The world has been changed for the better.
